Reedham is situated 12 miles south east of the city of Norwich, on the banks of the river Yare and is famous for its chain ferry, which transports cars across the river all year round. During the summer months it is not unusual to wait for over an hour to cross the river, as it is a popular destination with visiting tourists. Reedham church, St John the Baptist, was completely gutted when the thatched roof caught fire in 1981. This was caused by the cigarette of a workman, who was at the time, carrying out repair work to the tower.
