West Raynham village, Norfolk

West Raynham is a small village approximately 6 miles from Fakenham with a primary school and village hall. The Brown Lady of Raynham Hall is one of the most famous hauntings in Britain, because of the strange form captured by photographers from 'Country Life' magazine in 1936. She walks the staircase of the 17th century Hall in a brown dress. She is thought to be the ghost of Dorothy Walpole, sister of Sir Robert Dorothy who died of smallpox in 1726. She supposedly returns to look for her children. In 1936, the apparition was allegedly captured by two professional photographers, who were taking photographs of the hall for 'Country Life' magazine. There have been more recent stories suggesting the haunting has moved to a road between South and West Raynham, but this has not been verified. The spirit has not been reported at the hall since the photograph was taken. The RAF had a base 2 miles from West Raynham from the 1930’s, but this closed in the 1990’s and the land has now been sold by the MOD. St Margaret’s was first built in the 11th century and extended in the 14th century. It fell into ruin from the 1720's when the roof lead was removed, to help pay for the restoration of St. Mary's, in East Raynham, but it has since been partially restored and is used occasionally.
