Woodton

Woodton village information

Woodton is a small village 5 miles from Bungay. It is both a commuter village for Norwich and a village for retirees. Woodton holds an annual ‘Farming Day’, usually on the first weekend of September and a flower show in July. Catherine Suckling, Horatio Nelson’s mum, came from Woodton and Horatio’s grandfather, Rev. Maurice Suckling was the rector in Woodton. It is thought that Nelson spent holidays in the village where he would often climb a tree that is now known as ‘Nelson’s tree’. The original settlement was probably located north of Church Road but moved, possibly after the plague. Church Road itself moved from north of All Saints’ Church to south of it, sometime at the turn of the 18th/19th centuries. The entrance of the church was moved to the south in the 1870’s. The church has a round tower, which is apparently almost exclusive to East Anglia. The church has some surviving medieval windows depicting St Catherine and St Margaret, crushing a dragon under her feet.
