NORFOLK > TOWNS AND VILLAGES > SHERINGHAM

Sheringham is on the North Norfolk coast and, up until the late 19th Century, it was just a small fishing village boasting nearly 150 boats. The fishermen brought ashore catches such as cod, whiting and skate, as well as crabs and lobsters, which the town is renowned for today.

In 1887 the rail link from the Midlands and the linking up with the Great Eastern line in 1906 meant that the number of visitors to the town greatly increased.

Sheringham is a busy town with a good variety of family run shops and a very popular market. It also has an eighteen-hole golf course and a leisure centre.

The beach is mostly shingle and has been awarded the blue flag so is a great spot for bathing.

The North Norfolk Steam Railway runs from the old Sheringham station, through Weybourne and on to Holt. It is an ideal way of seeing the beautiful Norfolk coastline and surrounding countryside.

Sheringham Park is owned by the National Trust and has magnificent displays of rhododendrons and azaleas during May and June when they are in full bloom. There are several way-marked routes, ranging in distance, with spectacular views.
