Afternoon Tea in Norfolk

There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea - Henry James

There are few things more quintessentially British than afternoon tea and this custom was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in 1840. The Duchess would find herself hungry around 4 o’clock in the afternoon, with the evening meal in her household not being served until 8 o’clock, leaving a long period of time between lunch and dinner, the Duchess requested that a tray of tea, bread and butter and cake be brought to her room during the late afternoon, and she would often invite friends over to join her.

Today it’s a great excuse to eat cake and drink tea until you feel ready to burst and is the perfect way to celebrate any occasion, from baby showers, anniversaries and birthdays to hen parties, christenings and weddings. Hand-made delicate sandwiches, freshly baked cakes, scones with jam and cream, loose tea served in a china teapot and elegant crockery; what’s not to love? Whether you are after a stylish setting or a cosier environment, there are plenty of places in the county offering this British tradition.
