Tasburgh village, Norfolk
Tasburgh is a village 8 miles from Norwich, just north of Long Stratton. The ghost of Amy Robsart apparently appears at her childhood home, Rainthorpe Hall, in Tasburgh. Amy married Robert Dudley in 1550, who was a favourite of Queen Elizabeth and he spent a great deal more time at court than he did with his young wife. It was rumoured that Elizabeth I and Dudley would have married if Dudley wasn’t already married. In 1560 Amy was living in Cumnor Place in Oxfordshire when she died, aged 28 years, after falling down the stairs. Did she fall or was she pushed? Whatever really happened, her death ruined Dudley’s chances of marrying the Queen, and he had to settle for being the Earl of Leicester.
