Published date: April 2020

The Maddermarket Theatre was formed in 1921 by its founder Nugent Monk and is a unique and intimate theatre located in St John’s Alley, Norwich. Audiences across the ages have enjoyed incredible theatre, comedies and music concerts at this community theatre, situated in the heart of Norwich’s city centre.
A registered charity, the Maddermarket Theatre relies heavily on ticket and bar sales as well as donations and the generosity of volunteers. It is home to Mad Red Theatre School and resident amateur theatre company, The Norwich Players, who have been around since 1911 and have been performing at The Maddermarket since its formation as a theatre in 1921. The group have performed over 1000 plays at The Maddermarket since then and continue to put on very professional performances.
Most of the theatre’s performances take place in the 300-seat auditorium, equipped with air-conditioning and comfortable seating. There is both the stalls area on the ground floor and balcony seating, both with excellent views of the stage. Some performances take place in the Emmerson Studio Theatre which can hold up to 50 seats, and the Maddermarket Theatre Bar, which can hold up to 65 seats.
The Maddermarket Theatre own the largest collection of costumes as a theatre in the whole of East Anglia, and these are all available to hire, along with their collection of props.
The theatre’s cosy bar is a great place to enjoy a drink both before and after a show. It serves a range of alcoholic beverages, soft drinks and hot drinks and interval drinks may be pre ordered from the bar. The bar is often frequented by performers, who can be spotted here enjoying a drink after a show.
