Located on the Cromer Road, a short distance from the centre of Sheringham, Priory Maze and Gardens is set within 10 acres, with various themed gardens and a hedge maze. Beautiful gardens and diverse planting have created the perfect habitat for a wide range of mammals, birds, and insects. Discover their resident pheasants, woodcock, snipe, kingfisher and goldcrest, as well as many other regulars and maybe even spot waxwings, firecrest, crossbills and tree creepers.
During the summer their wildflower meadow provides habitat for countless moths and other insects and bee orchids and the common marsh orchid can be found in abundance. Ponds, streams, small waterfalls and weirs ensure the site has a constant supply of running water and water loving plants, animals and insects such as willows, gunnera, kingfishers and amphibians all live here in perfect harmony.
The Pine Walk is a wild and natural area, with hellebores and narcissi in the early season followed by hardy begonia and striking hydrangea later on. The Winter Garden is full of beautiful foliage such as variegated hollies, plain leaves and skimmia, much of which is used to make their popular homemade Christmas wreaths.
The Herb and Aromatic Gardens are full of herbs and other plants to tickle your nostrils, some pleasant and others not so pleasant! The Romantic Garden full of Tasmanian Tree Ferns and Bamboo has colourful planting and is a lovely spot to wander around. The Riviera Garden with its large Verbascum towering over the shingle pathway leads to the ‘living hut’.
The design and size of the Priory Maze is based on the ruins of the adjacent Beeston Priory, with copper beech copying the layout of the remaining ruins with hornbeam infills. The maze is not symmetrical and has no middle and the viewing platform is located where the cloister would have been, giving visitors a great view of the maze and gardens.
The café at Priory Maze and Gardens serves delicious food and drink throughout the day, including their popular full breakfast, lunch menu and afternoon tea. The café and gardens are available for private hire.
The Plant Centre and Gift Cabin sell plants that have been grown inside their poly-tunnels and they offer a wealth of knowledge, advising customers which plants are best suited for their requirements.
