Time and Tide Museum of Great Yarmouth Life
Published date: July 2020
Located in a residential part of Great Yarmouth, a 10-minute walk from the beach and the town’s popular seafront, the Time and Tide Museum is an interesting place to visit. Housed in one of the UK’s best-preserved Victorian herring curing works, Time and Tide tells the story of Great Yarmouth from its Ice Age origins to the present day. Visitors can experience the heady atmosphere of a 1950s fish wharf and still smell the aroma of smoked herring and take the wheel of a steam drifter.
Listen to gripping tales of wreck and rescue and meet some of the colourful characters who made their living from the sea and discover the town’s rich maritime heritage and its development as a popular seaside resort. Take a wander down a typical 1913 ’Row’ and see inside the homes of a local fisherman and his neighbours. Follow Great Yarmouth’s transformation from a sandbank to the present day, through times of boom and bust and war and peace. Explore the smokehouses, where the lingering aroma of smoked herring is a reminder of times gone by.
Visitors can enjoy lively hands-on displays, games, puzzles, free audio guides, film shows and children’s activities that all help to bring the great story of Great Yarmouth vividly to life.
The Silver Darlings Cafe at the Time and Tide Museum is family friendly and serves light meals and snacks with daily specials and has the same opening hours as the museum. The spacious courtyard beneath a spectacular canopy of sails is a relaxing spot to stop and refuel, surrounded by historic fishing boats. It can be accessed with or without museum admission and can be hired for private functions when the museum is closed.
Group visits and school visits are welcome, further details of which can be found on their website, along with opening times, admission prices, special events and access facilities.
