William Marriott built the railway in 1887 and today visitors can enjoy a special journey on one of Britain’s most scenic heritage railways. The 10.5 mile trip being hauled by a steam engine or heritage diesel locomotive through beautiful Norfolk countryside is a magical experience. Throughout the summer steam trains run daily on ‘The Poppy Line’, and these trips offer spectacular views of the stunning Norfolk coastline.
Running from the old Sheringham station, through Weybourne and on to Holt, it’s the perfect way to explore this part of Norfolk and attracts many visitors each year. Disembark and discover historic stations and picturesque villages and towns or simply enjoy the return steam train journey from Sheringham Station from the comfort of your seat.
Visit the museum, learn about the railway’s history, see the signal box and children can enjoy the activity carriage. Dogs and bicycles are welcome on the trains, but there is a nominal charge. Buffet facilities are available on some trains. The North Norfolk Railway hop - on, hop - off day Rover Tickets give you unlimited travel on the day of your visit.
Throughout the year special events are organised by the North Norfolk Railway including Santa Specials, 1940s weekend and The Norfolk Lights Express.
The North Norfolk Railway offers a number of Rail Experiences and these make the perfect gift for those who love steam engines and everything related to the railways. From a 5 Day Steam Driver Experience, to Diesel Driver Experience, Signalling Experience Day, Guard Experience Day and Behind the Scenes Experience, there is sure to be something to excite all enthusiasts. Their experienced and knowledgeable crews, staff and volunteers will ensure it’s a once in a lifetime experience.
